Well, in case you didn’t know already, today was the day that Toshiba threw in the towel on the format war, handing victory to Sony and the Blu-Ray alliance.
We carefully assessed the long-term impact of continuing the so-called ‘next-generation format war’ and concluded that a swift decision will best help the market develop,” said Atsutoshi Nishida, President and CEO of Toshiba Corporation. “While we are disappointed for the company and more importantly, for the consumer, the real mass market opportunity for high definition content remains untapped and Toshiba is both able and determined to use our talent, technology and intellectual property to make digital convergence a reality.”
That the move has come so swiftly was Toshiba is not altogether unexpected. 2008 has not been a good year for the HD DVD format, having suffered several high profile blows in the run up to todays announcement. Microsoft are now left flying the flag but surely they too will follow suit, it can ony be a matter of time before they announce a Blu-ray addon for the Xbox 360 and, once the dust has settled, we’ll be wondering what all the fuss was about.
