Philips have designed a remarkable looking TV in the 42PFL9900, no two ways about it. The first in Philips new range of Aurea TVs, the 42PFL9900 features 2 new innovations, namely the Ambient spectra and the Light Frame. Ambient Spectra? What? Sounds like something from Captain Scarlett, thought I - because I can be a tad random at times.
However once I got over my initial cynicism and actually read some of the bumpf that regarding this TV it seems that the Ambient Spectra and the Light frame actually serve seperate and distinct purposes. The Light Frame is incoporated into the Frame of the TV, which is able to glow thanks to a myriad of LED lights positioned inside it and the Ambient Spectra the name for the processing engine used to drive it. More advanced than Philips previous Ambilight technology the Ambient Spectra is able to produced localised lighting unlike any seen before. So if the top right of the image on screen contains a blue image and the bottom right contains a red one then you get appropriate blue and red lighting on the Light Frame, all nicely blended together. On the negative side however the White frame may not be to everyone’s taste.
